Epilogue

Dalpatbhai was aware of his responsibility to the people of Mansfield Township who had bestowed their trust on him, a foreigner. They had showed confidence in him and he could not let them down. By now, be it social work or politics, he was no longer a novice at it. He had been working for three years as a member of the Township Council and this experience was invaluable for his present role.

The first matter he concentrated on was the budget. He reduced unnecessary expenses and then with the backing of the other Committee members, introduced many new schemes.

Some of the old roads in the town were modernized. He personally looked into the project and made sure that the raw material was of excellent quality and would endure for several years. New parking lots were constructed in the town. A major part of the budget was now allocated to education and sports. He ensured that schools got the best sports equipment, new sports fields, well equipped libraries etc.

Some of the problems of Mansfield Township were long standing: no public water system, no public drainage system, very few industries etc.

These had to be addressed first, for there to be progress in the region. However, any new measures were immediately opposed by the conservative farmers of the region. Finally Dalpatbhai had to give in and forego some of the modernization plans he wished to implement.

Some ideas could be put into practice. A few could not be accomplished to perfection as Dalpatbhai wished. But, he was definitely able to achieve one thing: he proved wrong the belief of the people that the elected Representative forgets all his assurances when he is elected. He stayed in constant touch with the people. He used to say ‘Just because I won the election, it doesn’t mean that I am the Boss. I am here to serve the people.’ Everyone liked his humble and honest approach to work and Dalpatbhai set a new ideal for the people.

The Mayor, in his capacity as Police Commissioner, has the responsibility to ensure law and order in the region. This title is not in name only.

Luckily for Dalpatbhai, Mansfield County is a quiet region with a relatively low crime rate. So the police force here is not as stressed as in other parts of the country. However, there was one terrible incident during Dalpatbhai’s tenure which was an exception.

It was the day of the weekly market. There were quite a large number of farmers and other locals buying things at wholesale prices. Suddenly someone started firing from a car in the parking lot.

Everyone panicked and began to run helter-skelter. One man was hit by a bullet in the melee.

The police was informed and within minutes they reached the scene. Dalpatbhai too arrived soon after. The police evacuated the area and formed a cordon around the car. The Police Chief called out to the person in the car over the megaphone.

‘You are surrounded by the police. If you do anything violent, we will be forced to open fire.
